Axel, you’re right worrying about ‘more package than content’. So let’s talk about content.
It’s the right content that will help you become known with the in-crowd, who will function as influencers on their network and help you spreading your content.
But what content should you create? Make sure it’s relevant to what you do. I would advise you to start up a project. A case, a series of work you do for yourself, an ongoing investigation. No clients involved, just you. A sort of personal quest, something you always wanted to do.
Make sure the project incorporates your vision on architecture. What makes you a different architect? Is it you hate rooftops? Or you only work with certain materials? Are you looking for new ways to isolate houses? Theme your project with a vision that reflects upon you.
And now for the 2.0 chapter. Start a blog about your project and keep it up to date. Talk about the proces of your project. Post pictures, sketches, stuff you found related to what you do, results you achieved or didn’t achieve. Your blog will be your central contenthub from which you can draw links to twitter, facebook, linkedin, etc…
As an architect you know Rome wasn’t built in a day, so be patient. Remember you started your project for yourself and not as a promotional stunt to draw attention to yourself. Be sincere. In the long end in-crowd will notice you, bloggers will pick you up and will write about your project.
To illustrate what I just said I refer to Kristof Ramon, a Belgian photographer, who did a series on cycling. He did it from a very personal point of view.
He loves cycling, hence the theme and he loves photography. So he investigated how he could incorporate his vision on photography in his project. He ended up with a very original series on cycling. And after a year of hard work he’s finally being picked up. Recently a cyclingblog awarded a picture of him as ‘Flickr Cycling Photos of the Year’ and he landed a job with a Belgian manufacturer of cycling-wear and ended up doing their new catalog.
